The Fiat 128 Rally was a sporty, 1.3-litre-engined version of the 128 two-door saloon, introduced at the 41st Geneva Motor Show in March 1971. At the 53rd Turin Motor Show of November 1971 Fiat introduced the 128 Coupé, also called 128 Sport, a 2-door, 4-seat coupé based on a shortened 128 chassis.

The original Fiat 128 Rally didn't make it to the United States. Fiat issued that special 128 in 1971; it featured a 1,290cc engine that produced 67 horsepower, alloy wheels, sport trim, and a set of rally lights. The later U.S.-version 128 Rally got steel wheels, a graphics package, body-color front seat stripes, and a dash-mounted tachometer.

What a generally good little car the 3-door hatchback Fiat 128 3P is! I was impressed by its eager performance, which reminded me of the old Fiat 124 which on first acquaintance was such a pleasant surprise to drive, its ability to swallow goods and chattels after the easy-to-fold back seat had been stowed, and the reasonably quiet manner in which its o.h.c. 73 (DIN) b.h.p.. 1,290 c.c.

The Fiat 128 Sport Coupe continued its maker's tradition for spinning out appealing sporting coupes from cooking family saloons. It was pretty and like its saloon cousin, was great to drive, eve if the steering and gearchange were heavier than rear-wheel drive rivals. Those interested in a more pure sporting experience will surely prefer the Fiat 124 Sport Coupé. On paper, the twin cam mill and the RWD layout come across with more sincere sporting intentions.
